Inspired by the welcoming public spaces in major metropolitan areas across Europe, the intent of this project was to redevelop a parking area and the adjacent pocket park into a public pedestrian plaza, in line with the updated North Beach Master Plan.
This project involved the closure of an existing drive aisle near the Normandy Isle Monument at the intersection of 71st Street and Normandy Drive, and the adjacent surface parking lot, to create a safe space for people to express themselves and create shared, cultural experiences with neighbors, friends, family, and even strangers.
Services for this project included re-routing existing drainage within the driving aisle and providing incidental grading to connect the existing sidewalk with the existing park by elevating the pavement within the driving aisle. This also included re-routing existing pedestrian crosswalks and meeting with FDOT on traffic impacts resulting from this project.
